AirfryerPoint FAQ — Air Fryer & Countertop Cooking Questions

This page answers the most common questions about air fryers and countertop
cooking appliances that AirfryerPoint covers in our detailed
buying guides and how-to posts. Each answer links to a deeper guide or
roundup in our archive.

Choosing the Right Air Fryer

How do I choose the right size air fryer for my household?

Air fryer capacity is rated in quarts (qt) or liters. A 2-3 quart basket is
fine for one or two people making single-portion meals. A 5-6 quart basket
fits a family of three to four with sides. A 7+ quart or dual-basket air
fryer handles larger families, batch cooking, and whole chickens. Our
7-quart air fryer guide and
12-quart air fryer guide walk
through the size sweet spot for each household type.

What’s the difference between a single-basket and dual-basket air fryer?

Single-basket air fryers cook one item at a time. Dual-basket (or
two-zone) air fryers have two independent baskets that can run at different
temperatures and times, so you can cook a main and a side simultaneously
without flavor transfer. Dual-basket designs usually cost more but save real
time on weeknight dinners. See our
dual-basket air
fryer guide
for sync-finish models that coordinate cook times across both
baskets.

Do I need an air fryer oven or just a basket air fryer?

Basket air fryers are compact, fast, and easy to clean — ideal for
reheating, fries, wings, and small roasts. Air fryer ovens (also called
air fryer toaster ovens) are larger countertop units with multiple racks,
rotisserie spits, and windowed doors — better for family-sized meals,
sheet-pan dinners, dehydrating, and rotisserie chicken. Our
multi-rack air fryer
oven guide
and

the best oven-style picks.

Air Fryer Use & Cooking Techniques

Do air fryers need preheating?

Most modern air fryers reach cooking temperature in 2-3 minutes, so
preheating is short. Preheating does help with crisping — especially for
frozen foods, breaded items, and anything where you want immediate sizzle
on contact. Skip preheating for delicate items like fish fillets and
veggies that dry out fast.

Can I use aluminum foil or parchment paper in an air fryer?

Yes — both work well and make cleanup easier. Use parchment paper liners
with holes (sold as air fryer liners) so air circulates under the food.
Aluminum foil works for wrapping delicate items or lining the basket, but
leave at least 30% of the basket uncovered so airflow isn’t blocked.
Never put foil or parchment in without food on top — the direct heat can
blow it into the heating element.

What’s the best oil to use in an air fryer?

Oils with a high smoke point work best: avocado oil (520°F), refined
avocado, grapeseed (420°F), or light olive oil. Spray oils designed for
air fryers give the thinnest, most even coat. Avoid aerosol cooking sprays
like PAM directly on the basket — they can damage non-stick coatings over
time. A refillable oil mister with your preferred oil is a better long-term
choice.

Can I reheat leftovers in an air fryer?

Yes — air fryers are excellent for reheating. They revive the crispness
of fried foods, pizza, fries, and roasted items far better than a
microwave. Use 350°F for 3-5 minutes for most items, and check halfway
through. Cover wet dishes (curries, stews) with foil to prevent drying.

Cleaning & Maintenance

How do I clean my air fryer basket and tray?

Most air fryer baskets and trays are dishwasher-safe (top rack). For
hand-washing, soak in warm soapy water for 10 minutes, then use a
non-abrasive sponge. Stuck-on food responds to a paste of baking soda and
water, applied for 15 minutes before scrubbing. Wipe the interior heating
element with a damp cloth once it’s cooled — never submerge the main unit.
Our accessory
kit guide
covers silicone liners and stackable racks that reduce
cleaning frequency.

How often should I deep-clean my air fryer?

Wipe the basket and tray after every use. Deep-clean the heating
element and interior once a month (or more often with heavy use). Soak
the basket and tray in hot soapy water weekly. If you notice smoke during
cooking or lingering odors, that’s a sign to deep-clean the heating
element — built-up grease is the usual cause.

Air Fryer Recipes & What to Cook

What are the best foods to cook in an air fryer for beginners?

Start with foods that have a clear visual cue: frozen french fries,
chicken wings, breaded fish fillets, and roasted vegetables. These are
forgiving and produce clear before/after results. Move on to harder items
(whole chicken, baked goods, dehydrated fruit) once you’ve learned your
machine’s hot spots. Our
rack systems guide covers
accessories that make multi-level cooking easier.

Can I bake in an air fryer?

Yes — small cakes, muffins, cookies, and even single-portion quiches
bake well in basket air fryers at 300-325°F. Use silicone or metal pans
that fit your basket. Air fryer ovens (toaster-oven style) handle larger
bakes, sheet-pan dinners, and even small loaves of bread. Reduce typical
oven temperatures by 25°F and start checking for doneness 5 minutes
earlier than the recipe states.

Air Fryer vs Other Appliances

What’s the difference between an air fryer and a convection oven?

An air fryer is a small, high-velocity convection oven with a compact
chamber and a focused heat source. A convection oven is a full-size oven
with a fan. Air fryers cook faster (smaller space, more focused heat) and
crisp better (closer heating element), but hold less food. For everyday
family meals, a countertop convection or air fryer oven can replace both
appliances. See our
toaster oven broiler guide for
hybrid convection-toaster ovens.

Should I buy a deep fryer or an air fryer?

Air fryers use rapid hot air and a teaspoon of oil to mimic deep-fried
texture with a fraction of the fat. They’re safer, easier to clean, and
better for weeknight cooking. Dedicated deep fryers still win for authentic
texture on battered foods (fish, onion rings, beignets) where total
oil-immersion matters. Many households keep both. Our
electric deep fryer guide and
compact deep fryer guide cover
the best small-tank options.
